Current roadworks, planned roadworks and road closures
Details of current roadworks, planned roadworks, traffic restrictions and road closures in and around Doncaster.
Large roadwork schemes
Doncaster Gateway One
Major works will commence on Monday 31st March and will last in the region of 21 months. Gateway One is a large-scale urban regeneration project focusing on the area around the Train Station and West Street and adjacent to Trafford Way, that will transform the part of the city with a new office development, that will act as a new digital technology business hub, as well as green spaces, and improved infrastructure.
To achieve these works the demolition of existing buildings will initially take place, and in the coming weeks the dedicated nearside lane of Trafford Way, that leads to West Street and the rail station forecourt, will be closed to allow for hoardings to be erected to encompass this area for site safety. These works are planned to take place overnight from 7pm and 6am between 25th April and 2nd May with Trafford Way reduced to a single lane during these hours.
Following these works, the lane for West Street and Doncaster Station will be closed up to the West Street access on Trafford Way Westbound (from the Cleveland Street roundabout). This will leave two lanes on Trafford Way for the full duration of the works, which is expected to be completed in December 2026. This may impact on vehicle flows especially during peak periods (although access to West Street and the Rail Station will still be available).
Overnight restrictions will also be in place on West Street from 15th to 25th April 2025, with access to residential areas on St Sep West accessed via the station loop road.
Additional overnight closures/diversions may be needed during the project and will be communicated closer to the time.

A19 Safer Roads Fund Scheme - Toll Bar & Bentley
Pleased to provide you all with an update on the A19 Safer Roads DfT funded project which is currently into its second year. City of Doncaster Council (CDC) aspiration for the 3 year DfT funded project is to improve road safety along the A19 for all road users where feasible and achievable.
2024/25 (Yr1)
During this 1st year completion of safety improvements to the carriageway surface including enhanced road markings from junction of Victoria Avenue Bentley through to the cricket ground at Askern and the section of A19 from the level crossing adjacent Aldi to the North Yorkshire boundary has taken place and now complete.
Also within this 1st year as seen the successful installation of two (2) New Hi-Tech electronic Variable Messaging Signs (VMS), one positioned adjacent the junction of Church Street with the other at the junction of Winnipeg Road. These will not only be used for displaying road safety and campaign messages but also aid in giving advanced traffic management warning messages during flooding events, i.e., frequent closures of Fordstead Lane.
2025/26 (Yr2)
- Safety upgrades to ALL signalised pedestrian crossings along the A19. (Bentley, Toll Bar & Askern), this work is now through the design stage and currently awaiting to be programmed. In addition during the design stage it was identified that 4 of the sites required new carriageway surfacing, skid resistance improvements etc. on the approaches to the crossings, this element is to be carried out late July 2025. This work will include not only improved forward visibility of the signals themselves to motorists but also the introduction of ‘Pedestrian Countdown Markers’ for crossing users.
- Introduction of Average Speed Camera System - From Victoria Avenue in Bentley through to Cricket Ground at Askern, with the inclusion of Spot Speed cameras either side of Darios crossroads (junction of Sutton Rd/Rockley Lane). Installation of the infrastructure for this element (camera poles etc.) is programmed to start week commencing 11th August 2025.
- Speed Limit Changes - The short 40mph section of Askern Road between Bentley and Toll Bar has now been removed and is now subjected to a limit of 30mph.
- Speed Limit Changes - The two existing 60mph sections of the A19 being reduced to 50mph, (Adwick Lane Toll Bar to Toddler Day Care Centre Owston and Whitehall Cottage Owston to Cricket Ground Askern) the Traffic Regulation Order for these are now in place and the signing design is well underway and physical signing for the new limits is hoped to be in place circa late September 2025.
- Speed Limit Changes - The existing 40mph section of A19 running through Owston crossroads at Darios (Toddler Day Care Centre to Whitehall Cottage) being reduced to 30mph. The Traffic Regulation Order for this is now in place and the signing design is well underway and physical signing for the new limit is hoped to be in place circa October/November 2025.
- Introduction of New Signalised junction with B1220 Askern Road Owston.Design for this is now complete and works are currently programmed to commence on site late September early October 2025, with an estimated build time of 8-10 weeks
.
- Introduction of New Signalised junction, Rockley Ln/Sutton Rd/Stockbridge Ln Owston (Darios Crossroads).
This location is currently at the early design stage and whilst there is a possibility of a late 2025 start on site, however it must be stressed that as this is one of more complexed elements of the overall project it is imperative that it isn’t rushed and the design will be subjected to a full stage 1-2 safety audit prior to construction therefore the completion may extend into early 2026 or into year 3, 2026/27 financial year.
- Introduction of New Pedestrian Crossing Facility (Zebra), outside Lidl supermarket, Bentley.
Design has been completed and has been submitted for its stage 1-2 safety audit, it is anticipated that it will be completed before the end of the current financial year.
2026/27 (Yr3)
With the complexity of the signalisation of Dario’s crossroads described above, this could possibly extend into the 3rd year.
Continuing feasibility studies are ongoing as to looking at possible additional smaller type improvement works that could be carried out during the final year, whilst these may be seen as minor, they should still have an impact on improving road safety for the A19, these however once identified would be reliant on any remaining funding from the allocation.
Further information will be forwarded to you as and when any information is available.
May I please finally inform you that all the road safety improvements mentioned, are currently on target and CDC are hopeful that barring no major engineering completions are encounter, all will be delivered within the allocated time period.
Great North Road, Scawthorpe
Barnby Dun Road, Clay Lane
CDC will be introducing a one-way outbound road closure between Clay Lane West and the entrance to Ardagh glass on Barnby Dun Road to undertake the construction of a cycleway along the Western side of Barnby Dun Road.
Works will commence from the 14th of July 2025 with the one-way closure put in place. The closure outbound only will be in place for around 12 weeks. Works will commence around the entrance to Ardagh glass and work in a Southerly direction towards Clay Lane West.
Towards the end of the 12-week period we will have to extend the one-way closure to the roundabout on Wheatley Hall road to undertake footway resurfacing and associated works, this should take approx. 2 weeks to complete.
On completion of the cycleway works we will need a closure of Barnby Dun Road fully to undertake carriageway resurfacing works, this will be undertaken over two Sundays between the hours of 7am and 5pm. We will confirm the date when the extension to the outbound closure and Sunday closures will be undertaken nearer the time.
