Who can foster?
We know there are many myths about who can foster. You can foster as a family or on your own, as long as you are aged 21 years or over, and have the time, space and skills to support a child, fostering could be for you.
Like the children in our care, our foster carers come from all ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds.
There is no such thing as a typical carer. We need a diverse range of foster carers, with different life experiences, to meet the diverse needs of the children in our care.
You don’t have to have children of your own; you can be working, retired, or on benefits and it doesn’t matter whether you own or rent your home.
We need people who can listen to a child, keep them safe, and support them to develop.
To foster for Doncaster you need:
- to be aged 21 or over
- have a spare bedroom a child can call their own
- have your own home or with a secure rental agreement
- be in general good health
- be available for a child whenever they need you
- able to take a child to and from school to health appointments and to meet their family
Don’t worry if you don’t think you are not a ‘traditional’ foster carer. If you can provide a child with a safe, supportive and stable home then you are the person we are looking for.
