Old Cantley was designated a conservation area on 8 August 2004. A full appraisal has yet to be carried out.

The Old Cantley conservation area covers the old part of the village from the boundary of Cantley Hall in the west to the village boundary at Nutwell Lane. The focal point of the area is the junction with Green Lane. With the exception of Home Farm, Cantley Hall and its grounds and parkland are excluded from the designation.

Whilst there appears to have been a small settlement in the area recorded as far back as the Domesday Book (1086), the major development that shaped the village's future was the Enclosure Awards of 1780 and the subsequent realignment of the roads to facilitate the building of Cantley Hall in 1785 and the laying out of its parkland by the Childers family. 'The Row' was built some time later as estate workers' cottages and there was gradual infill of buildings in the 19th century. The village core has been surrounded by further modern detached villa-style housing constructed in the latter part of the 20th Century.

Traditional form buildings are small cottages or terraces set on the back edge of the pavement constructed from brick, though these are now often rendered. Roofs tend to be clay pantile often replaced with concrete tile, and most original windows have disappeared from the area. Modern form large detached or semi-detached properties, set back off the pavement in large gardens, influence the character of the area. Other features of note are the contribution of trees of the Cantley Estate and stone walls of squared magnesium limestone.

There are no listed structures in the conservation area though Home Farm within the curtilage of Cantley Hall (Grade II*) could be considered as part of its listing.

The above description of the conservation area is only a brief overview subject to a full appraisal that will consider in more depth the features that make up the significance of the area.
