Hickleton was designated a conservation area on 21 December 1970. A full appraisal has yet to be carried out.

To view the location of the conservation area please go to the Heritage Map.

Hickleton is an estate village that has some suburban developments from the late twentieth century within it. The conservation area is made up of Hickleton Hall and part of its grounds and estate village to the north. The grounds of Hickleton Hall are a Grade II Registered Park and Garden of Special Interest. Hickleton is important in that all the elements of a Country House survive; the lodges, paths, garden walls and structures and estate village.

Limestone was the traditional material. Principle roof materials are slate and clay pantiles, although sandstone slabs are also in evidence. Limestone boundary walls are an important and extensive feature of the conservation area. The conservation area is well endowed with mature trees particularly in the grounds of Hickleton Hall.

Within the conservation area there are 27 listed structures including the Grade I listed church of St. Wilfred and Grade II* listed Hall. These can be viewed on the Heritage Map which gives the address, grade and reference number of the listed building. The reference number can be used to find the listing description for any individual listed building using the Historic England database. The cross on the triangular green on the eastern approach to the village, as well as being listed is also a scheduled monument.

The above description of the conservation area is only a brief overview subject to a full appraisal that will consider in more depth the features that make up the significance of the area.
