Our funding bid to Sheffield City Region for our next Quality Streets project in the town centre has been successful. The funding will see exciting changes being made to St Sepulchre Gate, Duke Street, Cleveland Street and Wood Street.
What is Quality Streets and Active Travel?
A number of schemes have been delivered in Doncaster Town Centre under the Quality Streets branding. The aim is to continue the transformation in the town centre and funding for the next phase of the scheme has been secured.
The work will be carried out in 2 phases. Phase 1 will be St Sepulchre Gate and Duke Street and we have completed the detailed design. Phase 2 will be Cleveland Street and Wood Street.
We have a concept design for phase 2 and are working on the detailed design. The design includes:
- A bi-directional cycle lane connecting Doncaster Train Station with the Civic and Cultural Quarter.
- Improvements for pedestrians with less street clutter, wider pavements and better paving.
- Improved bus stops and real time information points.
- Introducing one way elements on parts of Wood Street and Cleveland Street.
- Improvements to the Highway including loading bays and an improved taxi rank.
- Improved public realm including trees and planting.
- A digital infrastructure which will be incorporated into the design.
What is happening?
A number of schemes have already been delivered in Doncaster Town Centre and Eurovia Contracting are continuing with this transformation by improving the streets and making the town centre a vibrant, desirable visitor destination on behalf of Doncaster Council.
Main construction works are due to commence Monday 10th January 2022 and are anticipated to take around 9 months with an expected scheme completion in Autumn 2022. To allow us to commence works in the new year, we will be establishing our site office, completing trial holes and installing new signage from Monday 13th December ahead of the main works starting.
St Sepulchre Gate will have a road closure in operation from Monday 10th January 2022 for approximately 5 months. During this period access to the CO-OP funeral care will be maintained at all times and the exit through Spring Gardens from the car park will be maintained with a left turn only onto the A630
On Monday 10th January 2022 the suspension of car parking on Duke Street will take place and will be replaced with the temporary taxi rank from St Sepulchre Gate for approximately 5 months. Traffic Management will be advertised in advance and diversion routes will be in operation during any road closures. Duke Street.
The construction works are due to commence on Monday 10th January 2022 and are anticipated to take around 9 months with an expected scheme completion in Autumn 2022. Hours of work will be from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, depending on daylight hours, with some weekend work scheduled as and when needed.

Our plans for the town centre
Quality Streets is just one several projects detailed in our urban centre masterplan.
We hope this will help bring new employment opportunities and inward investment into Doncaster which will benefit residents across our borough.
This page will continue to be updated with further information on the scheme design and progress.
