Quality Streets - the transformation of Hall Gate and Silver Street
Our Quality Streets project is seeing some exciting changes being made to Hall Gate and Silver Street in Doncaster's town centre.
What is Quality Streets?
Quality Streets is one of a raft of projects transforming the town centre. The aim is to improve the streets and make the town centre a vibrant, desirable visitor destination where people choose to visit, stay and work in. The investment to Hall Gate and Silver Street is seeing some big improvements made to the area, such as widening the footpaths.
Hall Gate provides the arrival point from South Parade into the town centre, and we recognise that Silver Street is the key to a successful evening and night time economy.
The £2 million Quality Streets scheme, which has received funding from the Sheffield City Regional Local Growth Fund, is going to make such a difference to two very important streets in Doncaster's town centre.
Hall Gate
The changes will see Hall Gate transformed into a pedestrian friendly area. The road will be narrowed to make it one way to all traffic out bound and the pavements will be upgraded and made wider with high quality, modern slabs. This will create more outside space for businesses to have alfresco areas. Bus stops will be improved, dedicated cycle lane installed, existing parking bays removed, new trees planted and new lighting put in.
Silver Street
Silver Street will be much improved helping it become a bustling and thriving location. Top quality materials will be used throughout and a key feature will be the new bespoke lighting which will be a big draw for the area. The specialist lighting can be used for themed light shows for major events held in the town centre. This will include the likes of Tour de Yorkshire, St Leger Festival and the Christmas light switch on.
A key change will see Silver Street become one way for traffic during the day and pedestrianised at night time. This will have great benefits for businesses allowing them to create alfresco areas, while visitors and residents will be able to enjoy the space and new attractions safe from traffic.
Works update
The redevelopment of Hall Gate has now completed. The road is open to all traffic one way outbound and the new contra-flow cycle lane has opened.
The redevelopment of Silver Street has completed and the specialist lighting display is now on.
Silver Street traffic is one way out bound between 5am and 6pm daily. This allows daytime access to businesses for deliveries and loading. The road is closed to vehicles between 6pm and 5am creating a pedestrian zone in the evening.

Quality Streets is just one several projects detailed in our urban centre masterplan.
It forms part of the Innovation Quarter helping to bring new employment opportunities and inward investment into Doncaster which will benefit residents across our borough.
