CLOSURE OF DONCASTER ARCHIVES
Doncaster Archives on King Edward Road, Balby, was closed on 15/08/2019 following the identification of structural failings in the building’s reading room. Since then all of the archival holdings have been removed from King Edward Road and almost all have been placed for the time being in storage facilities outside Doncaster. These facilities are approved by The National Archives for the storage of archival material. The records will not, however, be accessible until they have been brought back to the borough. Some pre-1974 planning records, the burial registers for Hyde Park and Hatfield cemeteries, the death registers maintained by the medical officer of health for the county borough of Doncaster till 1939, and the Conisbrough Manor Court rolls 1265-1935 remain in the care of Heritage Doncaster and are currently held at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery.
Work is now underway to prepare new accommodation for the Archives service within the town of Doncaster. In the meantime, although Doncaster Archives & Local Studies Library staff can continue to respond to more general enquiries concerning the archives, full responses to more detailed enquiries will not be possible for the most part until the archives have returned to the borough. It is hoped that the archives once again will be housed within the town of Doncaster in the early part of the coming financial year 2020/2021
