CLOSURE OF DONCASTER ARCHIVES & LOCAL STUDIES
Doncaster Archives on King Edward Road, Balby, was closed on 15/08/2019 following the identification of structural failings in the building’s reading room. Since then all of the archival holdings have been removed from King Edward Road and almost all have been placed for the time being in storage facilities outside Doncaster. These facilities are approved by The National Archives for the storage of archival material. The records will not, however, be accessible until they have been brought back to the borough.
Doncaster Local Studies Library closed to the public when the library building on Waterdale closed, with effect from 23/03/2020, in preparation for the relocation of the Central Library to the new Danum Gallery, Library, & Museum. The closure date was brought forward in response to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Work is now underway to prepare a new research centre for the Archives and Local Studies Library within the town of Doncaster. In the meantime, although Doncaster Archives & Local Studies Library staff can continue to respond to general enquiries, full responses to more detailed enquiries will not be possible for the most part until the archives and local studies collections have been rehoused. The aim is to have the Archives & Local Studies Departments jointly providing a public service at a town centre location before the end of 2021.
Please get in touch with Doncaster Archives & Local Studies Library by email (see below) to find out whether we can answer your query in present circumstances; we’ll do our best to get back to you as quickly as possible.
