About me, your Elected Mayor

Mayor Ros Jones

My name is Ros Jones, and I am proud to be the elected Mayor of Doncaster. I was born in Askern, where my dad worked at the local colliery, and I still live nearby in Norton.

Before getting involved in politics, I worked for over 30 years in the public sector as an accountant and a senior manager. This experience has been invaluable as we steered the council through the budget cuts imposed on Doncaster by the government, whilst trying to protect front line public services wherever possible.

When I became Mayor, my first priority was to put Doncaster Council back on the right track. The council had been classed as dysfunctional. It was in government intervention, and it had let down local people. We have now changed that, and put the council back on a stable footing.

I am clear about my agenda for Doncaster. First and foremost is economic success. We must increase the quality and number of jobs on offer, bringing more high quality, skilled employment to the borough. We must also improve education and modernise our care services to cope with the growing and ageing population. I also want to ensure that local housing need is met and that we work together with local people and the voluntary sector. Finally, it is important that we get the basics right. That means providing effective, efficient services, such as collecting the bins, grass cutting and keeping our streets clean.

I am proud that in my first term, with the hard work of staff, we led the Council out of government intervention a year early. Since I became Mayor we have also seen improved educational outcomes and opportunities for our young people.

Doncaster is on a journey.  The birthplace of the Mallard and the Flying Scotsman and the base of the Vulcan bomber; the Doncaster borough, now City of Doncaster, is the home of Hitachi Rail fitting out Azuma trains, a proud mixture of both urban and rural communities, and home to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which is one of the UK's biggest and best visitor attractions.

Sadly, November 2022 saw our great airport close.  However, I am resolute in my determination to see Doncaster Sheffield Airport reopen once again. I will continue to do all I can to make that a reality.

Doncaster is renewing itself with new jobs, new private and public sector investment, new colleges, new homes and improved green spaces.

These are exciting times for Doncaster, and I am determined to play my part in driving the new City of Doncaster forward for the benefit of local people and local businesses.

"My vision for Doncaster - To create a Safer, Stronger, Cleaner and Greener Doncaster for all. Where no one is left behind!

Doncaster has the potential, the pride and the passion to prosper. It is up to us all to work together, to enable the people of Doncaster to thrive."
