Have your say: Universal free or subsidised school meals
Doncaster Public Health team are exploring options to offer universal free or subsidised school meals in Doncaster schools.
It has been estimated that around 4000 children across the city are living in poverty but are not currently eligible for Free School Meals (The Food Foundation, 2024), and over 40% of households are experiencing or are at high risk of food insecurity, meaning that that they do not have reliable access to affordable, nutritious, and safe food.
The provision of universal free or subsidised school meals can have many benefits including improved nutrition in children, and less financial pressure on struggling families.
We would like to understand the current situation in education settings with regards to offering free or subsidised meals, and whether they would be able to support the expansion of a universal or subsidised programme.
