If you are carrying on a business involving animals, under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of activities involving animals) Regulations 2018 you will require a licence for the following activities: Selling animals as Pets Providing or arranging for the provision of boarding for cats & dogs Hiring out horses (riding schools) Breeding Dogs Keeping or training animals for exhibition
This includes ‘Pet Shops’, ‘Selling Pets online’ or Selling animals to Pet Shops.
Keeping or training animals for exhibition – this includes businesses exhibiting animals for educational or entertainment purposes (This replaces the performing animals registration). For example, mobile petting zoo’s, petting farms, bird of prey displays, animal encounter companies and anyone keeping or training animals for exhibition before an audience will require a licence.
The keeping of certain species of wild animals is controlled by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.
