How much copies of birth, marriage or death certificates cost, and how you can buy them from us.

How much do certificates cost?

At the time of registration £4
Additional copies at time of registration £4
After registration, but less than 6 months £7
More than a month after the event (same day service) £16
More than a month after the event (five working days service) £10

Applying for a certificate

How to apply

You can obtain copies of certificates by telephone, by printing out and completing the application form and returning it via post, or apply in person at our register office Mon to Friday 9am to 4pm.

If you fall into one or more of the following categories then you can only apply by post.

  • family history applicants
  • applicants who cannot supply full information
  • applicants requiring certificates from more than one register entry

What information we need

For a birth certificate (short or full version):

  • full name
  • date and place of birth
  • parents' names 
  • mother's maiden name

For a death certificate:

  • full name of the deceased
  • date and place of death

For a marriage certificate:

  • full names of the couple
  • date and the place of marriage

Paying for certificates

You need to pay for certificates at the time of applying. You can pay by card, cash or cheque made payable to us.
