Information for School Governors

New School Governors

The role of School Governor is a very important role which will enable you to have a direct impact on ensuring that the children of Doncaster get the best possible education and achieve their full potential.

As a new Governor you will have been sent information which you will hopefully find useful in your new role. In addition there is information on this website that we hope you will also find helpful.

If this is your first experience as a Governor then we recognise that the thought of your first meeting may be daunting. However, there are a number of things you can do prior to the meeting to ensure that you are as prepared as you can be.

We would recommend that prior to your first meeting you:

  • contact the Headteacher of your school and introduce yourself

  • ask if the school has an induction programme for new Governors and how you access this

  • ask if you could visit the school and meet the Headteacher and/or the Chair of Governors

  • ask if there are any specific issues in the school that you may need to be aware of eg is it expecting an Ofsted inspection or has it recently had one, are there any specific community issues around the school

If you are unsure of anything, ask either the Headteacher or the Chair of Governors to explain this for you.
