Apply for a severely mentally impaired discount

What is this for?

To apply for a Council Tax discount or exemption because you or someone in your household has a Severe Mental Impairment.

Before applying, please check the discount and exemption page for more information about the qualifying criteria.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A completed Doctor’s Certificate below is required as part of this application. This should be completed and signed by the person’s GP or other medical practitioner. If you choose to complete your application now, this will need to be supplied before your application can be processed.

What is it going to cost?

Free.

What we need from you

We will ask you to register for a MyDoncaster account if you haven’t already. This will allow you to track your enquiry, and for us to tell you the outcome of your request. You will also be able to access additional online services offered by us.

You will need to supply your Council Tax account and Property Reference number to submit your request. These can be found on your bill. 

We will ask you to supply details about your household, and the nature of the person’s impairment.

You will also be asked to supply a completed Doctor’s Certificate Application Form Severe Mental Impairment - Doctor's certificate, and a copy of any qualifying benefit. This can be uploaded as part of this form, or supplied later. If you do not supply the required evidence, this may cause a delay to your application being processed.

What you should expect from us

Once submitted, we will decide if you are entitled to any reduction within 21 days. If successful, you will be issued with a new Council Tax bill showing your reduction. We may need to contact you if we cannot give you a reduction, or if further information is required to process your application.
