Lakeside and the Dome Leisure Centre

There was a Neatherd’s house on nearby Low Pasture, for the use of the common herdsman, who looked after the cows, oxen and horses on Doncaster Moor, The Beat, Low Pasture, Low Pasture Carr and Potteric Carr. He received a salary with a new pair of boots one year and a pair of shoes the next. In return he had to deliver a small loaf of rye bread to the Town Council on 5 August each year.

By 1853, the Neatherd’s house was in a very bad state of repair and it was replaced with a new cottage at the order of the Town Council. The house was let to the Town Moor Golf Club in 1932 and was demolished in 1988 for the building of The Dome leisure centre.

In 1993 work started to clear the area for the development of the new lake, with housing, industrial and commercial units, retail outlets and leisure areas.

The Dragon Boat Challenge has been held annually at Lakeside since 2010. Brightly painted dragon boats with teams of up to 10 people compete. This is organised by The Rotary Club of Doncaster and money is raised each year for different charities.

 Spiders at Doncaster Lakeside

Under the road bridge dividing Lakeside there are lighting panels by both paths. Spiders have colonized these areas and they are a specialized type identified by a local scientist as Larinioides Sclopetarius (or ‘Security Light’ spider). They make dense webs over the lights to catch the millions of aquatic insects like mosquitoes and mayflies. The wind tunnel effect of the road bridge underpass sends plenty of prey, already attracted to the lights, through to be snared on the very tough webs.
