Work starts on Doncaster link road improvements to unlock development sites and improve travel

Housing and employment sites will be unlocked and traffic and travel improved as work starts on the A630 West Moor Link scheme in Doncaster.

This important regeneration scheme will see significant improvements on the A18 Thorne Road, particularly the section on and around the Thorne Road railway bridge which is the link to the A630 (Wheatley Hall Road) and the West Moor Link to Junction 4 of the M18. It is a key route into Doncaster town centre from the east of the borough.

The first stage of the scheme will see a new, wider bridge built. This will allow the road to be widened to create a dual carriageway and a wider footway for pedestrians and cyclists.

The road will also be lowered under the bridge to remove the current height restrictions which sees high-sided vehicles diverted onto alternative routes. Important junction improvements will be made on the roundabouts either side of the bridge too.

These major enhancements will dramatically improve the road network, provide extra road capacity and support a number of key housing sites along the route.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said:

“This major road improvement scheme has major travel and regeneration benefits for our borough. It will remove a notorious pinch point especially at peak travel times, will ease congestion and cut journey times for road users. There will be big improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users alike.

“Increasing accessibility and road capacity means this important route can handle traffic growth in the future and enables significant private sector investment in new developments which create new homes, jobs and economic growth. It is a vital scheme for the borough and wider region.”

The bridge works starts on 22 July 2019 and will be complete in spring 2020. During this time people using this route will need to allow extra time to complete their journeys.
