Supporting the Great British September Clean

Keep Britain Tidy’s initiative which will see thousands of people nationwide help tackle litter in their neighbourhoods.

Earlier this year, more than 650,000 people were expected to don their litter picking equipment and head out on to Britain’s streets, parks and beaches in the ‘Great British Spring Clean.’

Regrettably, yet understandably, this was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Socially distanced clean-ups will still take place though, from 11 - 27 September 2020 and we are actively willing to help local residents, volunteer groups, businesses and schools in the fight against litter.

To ensure that the campaign complies with current Government guidance in relation to Covid-19, the campaign has been amended slightly to ensure the health and safety of all participants.

It is essential that you familiarise yourself – and your volunteer friends and family – with the Keep Britain Tidy clean up guidance in relation to coronavirus.

Cllr Chris McGuinness, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It was really disappointing for everyone concerned that the events planned for the spring had to be postponed but it was entirely the right thing to do.

“What we’d like to see is that sense of community spirit which has shone through the pandemic and people organising their own clean ups or joining pre-arranged litter picks – these cannot have any more than six people at a time involved though, and the guidance is for the benefit of each participant.

“All help is welcome in Doncaster’s fight against litter and environmental crime and we will dispose of all the waste you collect if you let us know when and where you are doing your event.”

As part of our ‘This is my Doncaster – Keep it Clean’ campaign; Doncaster Council staff and volunteers regularly hold action days to blitz local areas. In conjunction with the Keep Britain Tidy the council is looking for even more willing volunteers to donate whatever time they have to help clean up litter from streets and parks while recycling as much as possible.
