A new average speed based camera system is set to be installed in Hickleton and Marr along the busy A635.
The council led scheme is a proactive project to address road safety concerns of local residents and will help reduce the number of potential road incidents on this well-used road.
Initial preparation work is already underway and the cameras will start going up in the two villages in the middle of February with the system planned to go live in March.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said:
“We are determined to do all we can to improve road safety right across the borough. The stretch of the A635 running through and between Marr and Hickleton is very busy and after listening to residents and looking into it further we now plan to install a dedicated average speed based camera system to help control speeds and improve road safety for the two communities and the road users.
“As well as the road safety benefits the system should also smooth out traffic flows which can help with air quality in the villages. Reducing carbon emissions is an important part of our Climate Change and Biodiversity Emergency agenda and our new Environment Strategy.
“We are continuing to pursue plans for a bypass in the area and this investment in the speed camera scheme is a sound intermediate measure with the possibility of a bypass to come in the future.”
As part of the £250,000 scheme a number of cameras will be installed in Hickleton and Marr, alongside appropriate signage, to encourage motorists to drive within the speed limit.
All motorists are urged to drive responsibly, appropriate to the conditions and within the law at all times on Doncaster’s road network.
The scheme is funded from Doncaster’s share of South Yorkshire’s Local Transport Plan funding and the camera system will be managed by South Yorkshire Police.
Doncaster Council, together with the Sheffield City Region and Barnsley Council, are continuing to work hard to pursue the bypass for the area to relieve traffic volumes, air quality and road safety pressures.
