The council’s Visit Doncaster team and The Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s have joined in the Chinese New Year celebrations to the launch the Doncaster Dragon Boat Challenge 2020.
This spectacular team event will take place at Doncaster Lakeside on Saturday 4th July 2020 and teams can now book their spot.
Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history and according to the Chinese calendar, 2020 is the Year of the Rat.
In the Chinese Zodiac, people born in the Year of the Rat are believed to be energetic, outgoing, enthusiastic and high achievers – all important qualities for leading your team to dragon boat success this Summer!
Up to 36 crews from companies and organisations from the Doncaster and surrounding areas will battle it out in 30ft brightly painted Chinese dragon boats over the 200 metre course. They will be watched and cheered on by hundreds of spectators.
Each crew is made up of up to 10 paddlers, a beating drummer at the front of the boat and a steering helm (provided by the organisers) at the tail end.
The ancient festival promises a fantastic day for competitors and spectators alike with live music, Chinese lion dancing, food and plenty of fun for all the family to enjoy.
The event is being held to raise money for The Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s. The Charity raises money for the local community through fund-raising events and activities and through their community grant scheme helps a whole range of good causes.
Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said:
“The annual Dragon Boat Challenge is always a wonderful event at Doncaster Lakeside. It’s packed full of colour and excitement for the teams of local businesses taking part and the crowds cheering them on. What’s more it continues to raise lots of money for charity.”
Commenting on the Challenge, John Day from The Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s said:
“We are all really looking forward to this year’s event which should be a great day with lots of fun, music and entertainment. We hope to raise as much money as we can for the Team’s chosen Charities and for the Charities and worthy causes supported by the Rotary Club. Over the last 10 years, this event has raised over £127,000.”
