The views of people who live, work and visit Doncaster and Stainforth town centres are needed to help shape bids for significant amounts of government money.
Each town centre could receive up to £25million from The Towns Fund to deliver major improvement projects designed to make a big difference.
A number of potential projects have been devised by both the Doncaster and Stainforth Town Deal Boards and, as part of the bidding process, the council now needs to know what people think to the proposals.
Cllr Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Economic Development, said:
“We are pulling together investment plans to bid for big sums of government funding which, if successful, will complement our other plans to lift Doncaster town centre and help transform Stainforth.
“An important part of the bidding process is gauging the views of town centre users so we are encouraging people to look through the proposed projects and have their say.
“We are determined to enhance the perception of Doncaster to make it more attractive for business investment. The plans will help raise aspirations and increase pride in Doncaster and Stainforth. Our ultimate goal is to stimulate jobs and growth and make the whole borough an attractive place to live, work, visit and invest in.”
The Doncaster town centre projects could include:
Railway forecourt extension
This scheme would extend the new look square outside Doncaster railway station. Creating an additional public space will further enhance the route into the town centre, providing visitors with an even better first impression of Doncaster.
Multi-use building and public realm
This project would create new office space close to Doncaster railway station. A four or five storey building at this key Doncaster gateway would help create new jobs, enterprise and encourage further investment for the town centre.
This proposal would define a new future for key heritage sites in the town centre. It would see how they can be brought back to life so people can use and enjoy these fine buildings once again.
Projects being considered for Stainforth include:
This proposal will build on the planned improvements to transform the relationship between the station and the town and represents a transformational opportunity for Stainforth.
Town Centre hub
This proposal focusses on investment to improve the sense of place and support business growth in the town centre. The Town Centre hub project will improve people’s perceptions, drive footfall to the town and support the regeneration of Stainforth.
Activation of the street network in Stainforth is seen as a way to create safer and more attractive places, which will be more animated, deterring crime and anti-social behaviour and creating the conditions for regeneration and growth.
Headstocks and country park
It is proposed for the disused headstocks to become an iconic site on the horizon, enhanced by a new commercial offer (potentially including arts, culture, and creative industries) and potential country park.
