£138,000 awarded to Council to help increase tree planting in the city
Doncaster Council have been awarded over £138,000 to improve tree-planting capacity in the city.
The funding, which is part of DEFRA’s (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) Woodland Creation Accelerator Fund, will allow the Council to increase tree planting through extra staff capacity, growing our Tree Planting Strategy and commissioning an I-Tree Eco Survey.
The I-Tree Eco Survey will help identify the structure of Doncaster’s woodland cover, which will help accelerate tree planting locally.
Using this survey, the council will be able to further improve our future plans for tree planting, identifying specific hot-spots for potential new tree planting.
Hot-spots for tree planting are typically areas with low tree canopy cover at the moment and high levels of social deprivation, as well as areas with higher than average levels of pollution, areas with an increased risk of flooding and/or areas where new trees will bring the maximum benefit to local plant and animal life.
Strengthening our plans will also allow us to create a map, demonstrating those areas most desirable for planting within Doncaster, as well as providing calculations showing the potential and actual plantable space within the city, among other benefits.
Cabinet member for Waste and Sustainability, Cllr Mark Houlbrook, said: “I am delighted that the council has received this funding, which will add to our capacity to be able to plant more trees within Doncaster – and quickly.
“The Mayor pledged to plant one million trees within Doncaster over the next ten years and this extra funding will help us work even smarter towards this goal by increasing staff capacity and identifying further key, specific hot-spots to plant more trees. We are now in a climate emergency and must use all the appropriate resources we have to achieve our climate targets.”
As part of the tree-planting season, which runs annually from November up until early Spring, residents and groups are encouraged to take part in the Queens Green Canopy to help contribute to tree planting within Doncaster.
