This is my Doncaster - Get involved

'This is my Doncaster' is a campaign all about getting local people to take pride in their community.

Great British Spring Clean 2024

A womble with volunteer litter pickers at Lakeside Village

Organised in conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy, this popular event will run from 15 - 31 March.

Whether you are a resident, community group, business, school or individual, we want you to take part.

In the 2023 campaign litter pickers carried out over 70 litter pick events across Doncaster, over 1,500 bags of litter were collected, and volunteers covered over 1100 miles.

Last year, more than 1,000 volunteers across the borough came together to help tackle litter issues and spread awareness on environmental issues.

If you are a community group, school, business or with family and friends, we want you to get involved in some way to make a difference.

As part of our ‘This is My Doncaster’ campaign, we help facilitate this by loaning litter picking equipment out – if required – and arranging the collection bagged waste.

We’ve got loads of tips and advice to help you get started (below) and cleaning up safely, so whether you’re a litter-picking pro, or this is your first time, pledge to pick up a bag - or more – today.

Our campaign in the fight against litter, fly-tipping and environmental crime continues; and street scene teams are planning some more action weeks very soon. The purpose of these is to target hotspot areas; and encourage communities to get involved in cleaning up their neighbourhoods and taking pride in their area. The council doesn’t have the massive financial resources needed to keep everywhere spotless. It already costs us £500,000 each year to pick up dumped rubbish and dropped litter.

The only way we are going to make a positive impact to protect the environment is by working together with local people.

Show your support

If you fancy helping out by collecting litter while walking the dog or while taking a stroll with the kids, we can support you by sending free equipment (currently limited to 6 sets) like litter pickers and bin bags. We will also dispose of all the waste you collect. Just email communications@doncaster.gov.uk if you want to help out!

If you want to show your support for the campaign by requesting a 'This is my Street' window sticker, send us an email and one can be sent to you free of charge.

Get in touch through social media via @MyDoncaster and share with us your photos, videos and posts to help raise the event.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get equipment from?

Doncaster Council will provide all the necessary equipment you need FREE of charge.
There is currently a limit on the number of sets per individual request.

We will need the following information for delivery of equipment:

  • contact name
  • delivery address
  • location where we can leave items if no-one home
  • contact telephone number (optional)
  • email
  • proposed litter pick locations
  • number of adults
  • number of children needing short litter picker
  • size for hi-vis; small, large or xl

Who will collect the bags that I have filled?

Please notify us in advance of your pick and we’ll organise a collection. We aim to collect the bags within 3 working days.

How long does a litter pick take?

1 – 4 hours is usually sufficient to fill up a few bags.

What are the health benefits to litter picking?

There are numerous health benefits such as fresh air, walking and improving the environment of the area you live in.

What should I wear?

Wear appropriate clothing including sturdy flat soled shoes; long sleeved tops, and trousers not shorts. Don’t forget a waterproof coat if there is rain forecast; or sun cream and hat if it is going to be sunny. This year you will need your own protective gloves too.

Do I need to bring anything?

Depending upon how long you plan to be out you might want to bring a drink or a bite to eat – remember though to wash or sanitise your hands before touching any food.

Why don’t the council pick up the rubbish; why rely on volunteers?

The council doesn’t have the massive financial resources needed to keep everywhere spotless; it already costs us £500,000 each year to pick up dumped rubbish and dropped litter.  The only way we are going to make a positive impact to protect the environment is by working together with local people.

Where does the waste go?

The waste will be collected by Doncaster council and taken to our usual disposal site. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to separate and recycle the waste. If you are able to recycle some of the rubbish yourself, you can always take it to your local recycling site; or if there is only a small amount, you can put it in your household collection green box or blue bin
