PRIDE Award Winners - The Garden Villagers of Barnby Dun and Kirk Sandall
Representatives of the Garden Villagers receive their award from Mayor Martin Winter
For the last three years this dedicated group of volunteers have been adding a splash of colour to the villages of Barnby Dun and Kirk Sandall using plants to improve the general environment and inspiring other residents to make their own improvements.
They have planted hundreds of daffodils and crocuses throughout the villages as well as introduced and cared for lamppost baskets, tub displays and seating. They have also tamed an overgrown pinfold in Barnby Dun with hard landscaping and low maintenance planting.
To raise funds for their various projects The Garden Villagers have held plant sales and applied for funding from the Yorkshire Rural Community Council and Parish Council.
Finalists
Steve Johnson
Steve established the Doncaster branch of Freecycle – a not for profit website which enables people to find new homes for items they no longer have a use for.
The site has provided residents of Doncaster with an easy method to make greener choices, raising the profile of recycling and encouraging people to think if anyone could make use of an unwanted item.
The environmental impact of this site has been dramatic - items listed on the site during its first year alone would have otherwise created almost one tonne of landfill!
Bob Rockliff
A long serving, committed and enthusiastic member of Friends of Quarry Park volunteer group, Bob Rockliff can be seen working on, walking through or providing a friendly greeting at Quarry Park most days.
Bob provides constant invaluable support to the Countryside Ranger in the practical site management of the park, maintaining wonderful habitats that provide a haven for local wildlife and residents alike.
He has played a significant role in the development of the site including assisting with the installation of new facilities such as the very popular orienteering course.
