EMTAS provides a range of services to support schools to meet the needs of children from all Traveller backgrounds.
“There are no inherent reasons why a child from a Gypsy, Roma or Traveller community should not achieve as well as any other child.” National Strategies 2009
The term 'Traveller' includes different groups and communities, such as Showmen, Romany Gypsy, Travelers of Irish heritage, Circus and New Travelers. EMTAS provides a range of services to support schools to meet the needs of children from all Traveller backgrounds.
For children from a Traveler background entering F1 or F2 for the first time, schools can request up to 6 sessions of free settling in support from our experienced classroom assistants.
Experienced classroom assistants are available upon request as part of the Traded Service.
EMTAS has two outreach co-ordinators, one to support schools/settings engage their Roma community, the other in a parallel role for the Traveller community.
Their role is flexible to allow the service to be responsive to differing needs and is designed to complement the expertise already within schools to break down cultural barriers and overcome challenges.
This support is part of the core offer, so is free to schools/settings.
