Cusworth Hall, Museum and Park

Life in the Past

  • Key Stage 1 (adaptable for Key Stage 2)   
  • Session length - 1½ to 2 hours  
  • Curriculum themes – History; Science

Travel back in time to find out what it was like to go to school, do the washing, investigate household objects and identify mysterious looking objects used by the servants of Cusworth Hall from the past.

Who was Florence Nightingale?

  • Key Stage 1                         
  • Session length - 1½ to 2 hours
  • Curriculum theme – History    

In this “hands on” workshop children will have the opportunity to handle artefacts, sort and wash the bedding, clothing and bandages, learn about Victorian numeracy and join in with a costumed role-play session relating to “The Lady with the Lamp at Scutari”

Victorian Childhood

  • Key Stage 1 and 2       
  • Session length - 1½ to 2 hours
  • Curriculum themes – History; Science

How different was it being a child in Victorian times to being a child today? Go to a Victorian school; find out what working children had to do, investigate household objects from the past and experience working in the kitchen.  Teachers may choose either washing with dolly tubs or cleaning brass. 

A Timeline of Toys

  • Key Stage 1 (adaptable for Key Stage 2)  
  • Session length - 1½ to 2 hours  
  • Curriculum themes – History; Science   

This “hands on” workshop includes guided discussion and investigation through play, recognising and naming common materials and discovering how old toys moved without batteries or electricity.

Seaside from the PastNatural History

  • Key Stage 1
  • Session length – 1½ - 2 hours
  • Curriculum themes – Science, Geography, History

Find out about the natural history of the seaside in the past and try on costume.   Investigate habitats and food chains. Touch a real sharks jaw and a spiky puffer fish.  Find out what a Codd bottle was used for and would you like a penny lick?  Have a go at being a Punch and Judy Puppeteer. 

Christmas at Cusworth Hall

  • Key Stage 1 and 2  
  • Session length - 1½ to 2 hours  
  • Curriculum themes – History

Looking at old and ancient traditions to find out what Christmas was like for both rich and poor children. Children can listen to a special Christmas story by the range in the little kitchen, make a wish as they stir the pudding and enjoy taking part in Victorian parlour games.
