Background information

Civic Offices Day 1

The new five-storey office complex was built on what was the site of the old Doncaster College. The modern civic offices, which have a new council chamber as the signature element of the build, overlook Sir Nigel Gresley Square in the heart of the new Civic and Cultural Quarter.

The building houses most of the council’s services on one central site and includes a purpose built customer service centre. Convenience and quality service are the key objectives of this new one-stop shop. Based on its modern environment and location next to Doncaster’s new public square it should also be an enjoyable place to visit.

The customer service centre is intended to allow residents to perform all their council enquiries in one visit. This will save residents time and make the council more efficient and effective.

The new building also has strong 'green' credentials featuring the latest environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies such as natural ventilation and roof top planting for rainwater harvesting. This will make the low carbon offices highly efficient with low running costs.

The striking design using regal colours and quality materials, some of which have an added dimension of changing colour or reflecting light, will ensure the building is instantly recognisable as the new home for council services in the town centre.

About 1,600 staff are based in the new new building.

The new civic office was officially opened on Wednesday 16 January 2013.
