Why should tenants get involved?

Both tenants and staff can benefit from having tenants actively involved in making decisions about the housing service. It helps form a partnership and helps us improve services based on the comments and suggestions that are made. See Tenants' Participation Compacts below.

How can tenants get involved?

There are a lot of tenant and resident groups (TARAs) in the Doncaster area. They meet either on a regular basis or just occasionally. They discuss problems and ideas and put forward suggestions to the Council. See How Tenants Can Get Involved below. If you don't have a group in your area you may want to set one up. We are happy to give you advice and support to do this. Contact the Community Liaison Team.

What if I don't want to get involved?

That’s fine. We will always keep you informed through letters, leaflets and newsletters. We will also consult you about matters that affect you directly. See Consulting You below. We regularly carry out opinion surveys. These help us find out what you think of our service.
You can also put forward your comments and suggestions to us. Contact your Area Housing Office and we will make sure they are passed onto the relevant manager.

Will I be consulted personally about any changes?

We will tell you of any plans that affect you directly. If you have any concerns or complaints about such plans you should raise these directly with us. Contact your Area Housing Office. We will also consult you, along with other residents, about important issues which affect all residents or a group of residents. We will do this through whatever form of consultation is best. See Consulting You below.

Do you produce a newsletter?

Yes. The Community Liaison Team produces a newsletter called 'Housing Matters'. This keeps you up-to-date with what is going on and informs you about activities that are taking place in the communities where our customers live. We welcome suggestions for items of news or points of view that should be included. Contact the Community Liaison Team. Some TARAs also produce local newsletters.

We will inform you about such matters and encourage you to discuss any concerns or suggestions you have with us.

We may consult you through visits by staff or consultants, letters, surveys, meetings, open days or exhibitions. We will, where possible, offer you choices - not just give you information about decisions we have already made. We will ask you for your comments and look into what you say before a final decision is made.

We will also keep you informed about what is happening by sending you leaflets and regular newsletters.

Tenants' Participation Compacts

These are agreements between local tenant and resident representatives, housing officers and local councillors. They set out how tenants will participate in decisions about the management of the homes and estates.

We have a compact for the whole Borough, and will develop local compacts for each management area.

Community-based Housing Management Forums
These are small groups that meet on a regular basis to discuss housing issues. There is one forum for each management area. Each forum is made up of Doncaster Councillors and Council tenants. The dates of any Forum meetings are advertised in advance in the local papers and anyone in the community can attend.

How Tenants Can Get Involved

Tenants' and Residents' Associations: These are organisations set up and run by tenants and residents to represent the views of people living in an area. They are known as TARAs. Some TARAs are organised to cover a few streets or an estate, others represent people in certain types of homes eg flats, or sheltered housing.

TARAs act as a local 'watchdogs', protecting the interests of residents and working for improvements in local services.

There are a lot of associations in the Doncaster area. We support their activities by funding and supporting the Doncaster Federation of Tenants' and Residents' Associations. The Federation is run by a Committee of elected representatives. This meets every month to discuss matters that affect tenants with housing officers and councillors.

Our Community Liaison Team works closely with the associations giving support and advice.

Area Tenants' Forums: These are open meetings which any resident living in the area can attend. The meetings are organised jointly by our Community Liaison Team and The Doncaster Federation of Tenants' and Residents' Associations. They happen regularly and are an opportunity for residents to meet with housing staff and have their say about developments and improvements planned by the Council for their area. There are six Area Forums corresponding to each management area.
