What is the Problem?      Check before you contact us

Smell of gas

Where is the smell coming from? Act quickly. Turn off gas at meter. Check if gas has been left on unlit or a pilot light has gone out. Ring TRANSCO 0800 111999 from outside your home (using a phone, even a mobile, inside could spark an explosion).
Don't smoke or light a fire, don't switch anything electrical on or off and don't use the intercom. Open doors and windows to get rid of gas.

Smoke or fumes coming into room

Are the fumes in a room where there is a gas or solid fuel appliance? Open windows.
If gas, is there a smell of gas? See Smell of gas above.
If solid fuel, has the chimney been swept recently? You are responsible for getting this done at least once a year unless you are a senior citizen. Do not refuel the fire until it has been swept.

Central heating not working

Did you have it installed yourself? Did we give permission?
What system is it: radiators, warm air or storage heaters? Is it a communal system?
Is the timer or programmer set correctly? See HANDY HINTS: Adjusting Central Heating Controls.
What kind of heating is it: gas, electric or solid fuel.
Are you getting any heat at all? Are you getting hot water?

Fire or heater not working or Fire parts missing or broken

Did you have it installed yourself? Did we give permission? You are responsible for getting your own appliances repaired unless we gave you permission.
If a part missing or broken, which part is it? You are responsible for replacing the ashpan, fire grate or fire operating tools.
What type of heater is it: gas convector heater or fire, electric convector heater, electric bar fire or fan heater?

Radiator not getting warm, loose or leaking

Is the boiler working? Are other radiators affected? See Central heating above.
If it is not getting warm, have you tried to bleed the radiator? See HANDY HINTS: Bleeding a Radiator.
Is the room warm? If it is cold the thermostat valve may be set too low. A thermostatic valve controls the radiator temperature.
If it is leaking, where is it leaking from: joint valve or a hole?

No hot water or hot water heater faulty

Is there any water flowing from your hot taps? If not turn off the water heater.
What type of water heater is it: central heating boiler, gas water heater or electric immersion heater? Contact us with the details.
