General Advice
- Take action to prevent problems arising.
Report repair problems as soon as you notice them. Don't wait for them
to become emergencies.
- Looking after fixtures and fittings will keep them looking
good and make them last longer.
Make sure your drains run freely.
Do not put paint, solvent or oil of any kind, down sinks, toilets or
gullies.
Do not put bulky items such as nappies or medical pads down toilets.
- Safeguard your family, your belongings and your home.
Be security conscious. Take out household insurance and check that it
covers accidental damage, broken glass, and replacement of belongings
on a new for old basis.

Regular
Checks and Jobs
Annually
- Stopcock and gate valves: can you turn them easily?
- Heating: are the controls set correctly?
- Chimneys: have the flues been swept?
- Roofs: are any slates or tiles loose or missing?
- Gutters and downpipes: are any leaking or blocked?
Regularly
- Windows: wipe down windows and cills to remove condensation
puddles. Clean off any mould growth on wooden or metal frames using
an approved fungicide from a shop.
- Wastepipes: clean through sink wastes with a suitable
product from a DIY store.
- Limescale: remove with a descaler, available from
a DIY store
- Gullies: clear any leaves or debris from covers
and check that water flows freely.
- Hinges and locks: lubricate with a little oil.

Care
of PVCu and Aluminium Windows
Annually
- Brush or vacuum lower channels to remove all grit, making sure the
draining holes are clear.
Every 6 months
- Clean both internal and external frames and cills with washing-up
liquid. Use a soft cloth or sponge.
- Clean and lightly oil all moving parts to window fittings. Do not
use spray oils.
- Do not use
- abrasive cleaning powder or solutions
- bleach or strong cleaning fluids
- steel wool, Scotch pads or pot scourers.
- Do not drill into the frames to put up curtains etc. Use self-adhesive
hooks instead.

Security
Measures
Check identification
- Always ask to see identification documents before letting strangers
into your home.
- All people working for the Council carry identification documents.
- If you are in any doubt about letting someone into your home refuse
access and, if possible, contact someone who can verify their identity.
If there is no one to contact ring the Police.
Always lock up
- Shut and lock doors and windows when it gets dark and also if you
leave your home, even for a short time.
- If you have security locks or chains, use them.
