With decreasing budgets the role of the council is changing. One of my new priorities reflects the need to encourage attitudes of self-reliance and mutual support within Doncaster communities so that people can take control of their own lives.  We will be there to help the most vulnerable in society, but we should be working towards helping others to help themselves, signposting them to information and support within their own communities, as opposed to being the fall back option for everyone.

An excellent example of this is personal budgets for people needing adult social care.  The system allows adults who are assessed as having social care support needs to have a clear allocation of money that they can use to purchase the support they need.  This gives the individual the chance to select who provides them with the care, as opposed to it being decided by the council.
