The LA Professional Learning Programme is published for the calendar year. This is a new departure for the LA in terms of timing, but we have made the change after a great deal of thought and after consultation with school representatives. It is intended to relate more effectively to the staff Performance Management Cycle and to the pattern of School Improvement planning.
In compiling the programme, we have sought to further strengthen the scope of the programme and improve access to a broad range of professional learning events, networking, structured meetings, courses, cluster activities and consultancy. We have also taken note of indications from schools on aspects of school and staff development that are of particular interest and emphasis during the forthcoming 12 months.
Inevitably, during the year, there will be new national initiatives where details are not yet available. With that in mind, wherever possible, we have included details of date, timing and venue. However, in some instances, and for some kinds of professional learning activity, the degree of information cannot be given with certainty at the time of publication. Similarly, there may be occasions when a planned event needs to be repeated or a new network or cluster group is established, and in such circumstances we will keep schools informed through regular updates.
The programme is based on the principles of being as inclusive as possible. We feel that schools should have information about the breadth and variety of professional learning opportunities that are provided by LA personnel or brokered by established providers, including HE institutions through which accreditation and qualifications can be achieved. The majority of professional learning opportunities within the programme are allocated event numbers to enable potential delegates to apply for places through an effective on-line system. Other aspects of professional learning are also included for information and entails about accessing the training are given in the descriptive section where different arrangements apply.
