Design Review - The Doncaster Design Panel

The Doncaster Design Panel is a sub-group of the Town Team. Its role is primarily to consider the design aspects of major new developments in Doncaster and report its comments and advice to the Council in the case of planning applications.

Its central aim is to be a 'Critical Friend' to the Council and other decision-makers in the development sector. It promotes the very best standards in architecture, urban design and sustainable development for the benefit of Doncaster's urban renaissance.

The Design Panel's membership comprises of independent people from all walks of life, ranging from architects, urban designers and public artists to community leaders and business professionals. It meets on a two monthly basis.

The Panel was inaugurated in September 2003 and has met on 20 occasions. It has reviewed 35 major planning proposals and received presentations and lectures on a range of urban design and architectural issues.

The panel’s expertise has been put to good use when considering such proposals as the Community Stadium, the new Racecourse Grandstand, LIFT Projects, major housing developments, distribution centres and Town Centre residential apartments.

Panel comments are reported to the Council's Development Control Committee and it has been very successful in securing quality amendments to development proposals to transform potentially unsatisfactory schemes into designs that will be the envy of towns around the country.
