DVAC Inaugural Exhibition 'The Town'

Rosemary Firth

Diverse views of our town from a range of Doncaster artists.

DVAC began when the 'Art House' organisation suggested that Doncaster artists might wish to form a group. An initial meeting was held in February of this year and the philosophy of the group has gradually emerged during this time.

They are a group of contemporary visual artists living or working within the greater Doncaster area, who are seeking a 'critical' approach to the production of their artwork and who wish to bring about a wider understanding of the creative process through an ongoing programme of exhibitions. They would like to involve members of the public by using venues, which are not art galleries and hope to achieve their aims through mutual collaboration and contextual debate.

Julie Atkin

DVAC is a group of 13 practicing artists who exhibited a strong body of contemporary artwork ranging from, prints, paintings and textiles, to sculpture, photography and film. DVAC group members have diverse artistic experiences, working in many fields such as arts education, community arts, art therapies, commercial design, photography and filmmaking.

They chose the venue of the Design Centre for their inaugural exhibition 'The Town' because it shared their interest in the development of Doncaster's built environment and for it's prominent town centre position.

The exhibition ran from the 12 th December to 10 th February 2006 and was split into four segments, each with a differing focus, each lasting approximately ten days.

Karen Thompson

The first exhibition looked at inhabited space, both personal and private. The second explored the multi-layered history of the Borough. The third were textural works relating to structure and materials. The fourth commented on the environment and land-use.
