| | Earth Centre | Mayor Martin Winter today (Wednesday November 3) announced that he would not accept a transfer of the Earth Centre assets from the Earth Centre Trustees to Doncaster Council.
Making the announcement Mayor Winter said: "From the outset I have been adamant that if the Earth Centre was to be transferred to the Council it had to be without financial risk to Doncaster residents.
"I would liked to have helped but although every effort has been made to secure a worthwhile future for the Earth Centre, it has not been possible to negotiate a way forward with the Millennium Commission. Despite this not being our problem, we tried to put together a package that would create a new and feasible future for the Centre.
"The Millennium Commission refuse to give guarantees against financial liabilities related to the existing operation, and because of this, the financial risks are high. As Mayor, I am not prepared to take such a great risk on behalf of the people of Doncaster.
"I am deeply disappointed with this outcome but can see no possible means of securing the future of the Earth Centre without incurring significant costs for Doncaster’s council taxpayers. I do not think it is acceptable for residents to take on these financial responsibilities at the risk of having to reduce the level of other Council services to pay for it.
"I have today contacted the Earth Centre Trustees and the Millennium Commission to inform them of my decision and express my deep regret that it has not been possible to proceed."
