| | 05/03/10 - Historic Day for Doncaster | 24 new council homes will be built in Doncaster, the first for around 20 years.
Today Full Council gave its backing to a development in Denaby under the Government's Local Authority New Build Programme. Fifty members voted in favour of the scheme, with four abstentions, there were no votes cast against the proposals.
The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) have agreed to provide £1.3 million worth of funding from to build 24 new council homes. Doncaster Council will also put in £1.3 million, raised through prudential borrowing. The HCA noted that Doncaster Council's bid was one of the best value for money submitted in the region.
The project will deliver 8 two-bed houses, 9 three-bed houses and 7 four-bed houses. Work on the properties could begin in May 2010 and be completed by October 2011.
Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Regulatory/Customer Services and Housing, said: "This really is an historic day for Doncaster.
"I am delighted that members have supported the Local Authority New Build Scheme so overwhelmingly.
"The shortage of affordable housing in Doncaster was recently highlighted by the Audit Commission in its Comprehensive Area Assessment of the borough, these 24 new homes will help address this need.
"Today's decision sends out a clear message to Government and the people of Doncaster that this council is committed to providing more affordable homes for families on low incomes." |
