| | 24/02/10 - First new council homes in 20 years | Doncaster Council has been given confirmation of £1.3 million worth of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to build 24 new council homes. These would be the first new council houses built in the borough for around 20 years.
The initial bid to the HCA was for £6 million worth of funding to build 49 properties throughout the borough. The HCA has chosen to support the building of 24 new homes at Hesley Court at Denaby Main and will contribute half of the costs by providing £1.3 million towards the total cost of the project.
The project will deliver 8 two-bed houses, 9 three-bed houses and 7 four-bed houses. Work on the properties could begin in May 2010 and be completed by October 2011.
Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Regulatory/Customer Services and Housing, said: "It is unfortunate that the Homes and Communities Agency did not support our full bid but it is still good news that we have been offered funding for 24 new council homes.
"Our bid was one of the best value for money submitted in the region and the Mayor and Cabinet are fully behind this scheme.
"The shortage of affordable housing in Doncaster was recently highlighted by the Audit Commission in its Comprehensive Area Assessment of the borough.
"We are now awaiting approval of the New Build Scheme from Full Council on 5 March." |
