In 2003 Doncaster had ? days when air quality was Moderate or High

what can we do?

Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council monitors the air quality in and around Doncaster to make sure that we know if there are any pollution 'hot-spots'

But everyone can play a part in improving our environment especially our air quality.

On the Road

Road traffic is one of the main sources of air pollution in Doncaster so before travelling by car ask yourself:

  • is this journey really necessary? can I combine this journey with others?
  • can we take the bus, walk or cycle instead of taking the car?
  • what are the pollution levels like today?

If you must use the car make sure you consider eco-driving techniques, such as driving at a steady speed, changing gear early and decelerating steadily when possible.

At home

There are things you can do at home to also reduce local pollution levels and those in your house. This includes buying water based or low-solvent paints and glues, avoid burning solid fuels and having bonfires.

What else?

  • You can also make sure you don't drop litter, or even do a litter pick and clean up an area near you.
  • Recycle your household waste whenever possible.
  • Get other people like friends and family involved and let them know what they can do.
  • Report fly-tipping or smoky vehicles to the council.
  • Have a home energy report carried out on your home with free advice on how to improve energy efficiency. The The South Yorkshire Energy Eefficiency Advice Centre can be contacted on freephone 0800 512 012.
  • When replacing kitchen appliances look for 'A' rated ones that save on electricity.
  • Look into having solar panels or heat pumps installed.
  • Turn your heating down by 1 degree celsius - you won't notice the difference but the energy it saves is significant - as well as the cost savings too!
