Doncaster's air quality is not always good!
In 2011 Doncaster's air quality was Moderate to Very High on 10 days. These occurred mainly in the winter months when the weather was very cold.
How do we tell how good or bad the air quality is in Doncaster
To find out if the air pollution is low (good), moderate (medium) or high (poor) we have equipment called analysers to measure the amount of harmful gases (pollution). We then compare them to the Daily Air Pollution Index provided by the Government
The equipment that we use varies, some are very complicated whilst others are more simple. We use automatic ‘real-time’ analysers and diffusion tubes.
We locate the equipment all around the Doncaster area, especially where we think the air quality is at its worst. We collect lots and lots of information that we call ‘data’ which we then compare against the chart. We also have to write reports. In these reports we have to use the data to compare against figures called the air quality objectives. To do this we must use the data in some mathematics. You can try doing some of this maths, called statistics, on activity sheet PCAQ2 & PCAQ8. (See 'Things to do')
