Buying Used Cars
Ten consumer tips when buying used cars
- Take your time and don't buy a car in a hurry. Buying the wrong car can be very costly.
- Inspect the car thoroughly in daylight, take it for an extended test drive and consider having it inspected professionally.
- Always insist on seeing the v5 registration document before buying. Be wary if you are told that it is unavailable for any reason.
- If the dealer agrees to put right any existing problems, get the details written on the contract or invoice.
- You don't have to accept the traders source of finance. You may be able to obtain a better rate elsewhere. Check all details carefully before signing. Never sign a blank finanace agreement form.
- For information about a vehicle's history, check out the companies who provide details about cars as to whether there is outstanding finance, or subject to a total loss claim.
- Once you have signed an agreement on the traders premises, generally there are no cancellation rights or cooling-off periods.
- If you pay a deposit and then change you mind about completing the deal, you may have to forfeit the amount paid.
- If the dealer offers a warranty or guarantee (free or otherwise) make sure you read it to see what it covers and what it does not.
- A booklet on buying a used car is available from the trading standards service. In the council house reception.
