Rod fishing licences
If you’re over 12 years old and you want to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England or Wales, you must have a valid licence. You can get an Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence from your local Post Office™ branch in England or Wales.

Full and concessionary licences are valid from the 1 April to 31 March in the following year. An eight day licence is valid for 192 consecutive hours. A one day licence is valid for 24 consecutive hours.
Concessionary licences
You are eligible for a junior concession if you are aged between 12 and 16 years. You are eligible for an adult concession if you are aged 65 years or over, or qualify as eligible disabled by receiving one of the following:
- Long-term incapacity benefit
- Short-term incapacity benefit (at the higher rate)
- Severe disablement allowance
- A war pension which includes unemployables supplement
Proof of eligibility
If you are aged 65 years or over, you will need to show one of the following when applying for a concessionary licence:
- Birth certificate
- Retirement pension book or card (male applicants only)
- Valid passport
- Medical card
- New style photocard driving licence.
If you are eligible disabled, you will need to show one of the following when applying for a concessionary licence:
- Current order book showing you receive the appropriate benefit
- A Giro payment slip showing you receive the appropriate benefit
- Last year's rod licence (2001/02) showing disabled concession plus an additional proof of identity
- A letter from the War Pension Directorate confirming eligibility.
