All advertisements of the apprenticeships will have details of from where to obtain an application form.  Only forms from this source will be accepted.

Follow the instructions in the advertisement, which will specify the only sources for the proper application form. Notes of guidance on completion of the form will also be included. The advice will state, how, when and to whom the completed form should be sent.

How are candidates selected?

Stage 1:  Satisfactory submission of a completed application form.

Stage 2:  Satisfactory completion of a written test comprising :

Stage 3:  Satisfactory performance at interview.

Additionally, selection is subject to satisfactory references, health check and Declaration of Convictions.

How will I know how I have performed?

Those who are not successful at a particular stage will be advised by letter as soon as possible. Likewise, candidates will be advised by letter if they are to proceed to the next stage.

Those who make it to the final selection list will be made a provisional offer (subject to references, health and conviction checks as specified).

To accept the offer you must send a letter stating that you wish to take up the offer of the apprenticeship.

If at any stage you decide you do not wish to continue because you have changed your mind or wish to withdraw, simply contact the person with whom you have been dealing and let them know your intentions. This will save us from having to 'chase' you and may free up an opportunity for another candidate.

If it is not possible for you to attend on the given day, contact the coordinator by telephone as soon as possible. Alternative arrangements can be looked at.

Failure to attend without prior notification will be interpreted as a withdrawal of the candidate.

How the apprenticeship is delivered

The apprenticeships are delivered through a combination of work experience and college tuition. The apprentice is based at a Doncaster Council depot with a trade qualified mentor to guide, teach and assist him\her. College training covers theory, practical workshops, Health & Safety and some key skills.  Apprentices are usually required to attend one full day per week throughout the academic year, though some training providers may instead require block release for two or three week periods every eight weeks or so. The apprenticeship will involve you working towards a nationally recognised qualification know as an NVQ.

Over the first two years you will work towards NVQ level 2. On successful completion of the full level 2 program, you will go on to complete level 3 in the third year. Some trades also require a fourth year of trade consolidation; these include gas fitters, electricians and motor mechanics.

On accepting an offer of apprenticeship, a place will be booked for you at a college contracted to deliver your training. You will be contacted by college staff and invited to attend for an assessment interview- this is standard procedure before enrolling any student onto a college course.

You will also be advised of the Doncaster Council induction day when you will be formally inducted into your new roll by the relevant department and you will be given all the important start up information to help you make a success of settling into the role. Providing you have reached your 16th birthday this will be your start date.

As an apprentice you will be employed by Doncaster Council and paid according to a graduated scale of wages which will increase on successfully completing each college year.
