The Route 2000 Group is made up of local parents of children with disabilities, and professionals with an interest in childhood disability, such as consultants, nurses, teachers, social workers and representatives from the voluntary sector.
The group came together in 1998 with the aim of using their joint experiences and knowledge to help the families and carers of children with disabilities.
The name 'Route 2000' was born out of the idea that the Directory would guide families along the route through life, signposting the services and information that might help them on their journey. The group aims to help make this journey as easy as possible - by improving access to information, advice and services by raising the profile of childhood disabilities by promoting good practice in service provision by promoting better education of both parents and professionals by encouraging advocacy on behalf of children with disabilities by building bridges and encouraging liaison bewteen services and agencies on the one hand and with parents on the other
The means by which we aim to do this are: By compiling and regularly updating a directory of services and information. The Route 2000 Directory provides information on all kinds of issues that may affect children with disabilities from their earliest days through to becoming adults, signposting services, information and advice to help them and their families on their journey together. It is also providing a useful source of information for professionals across the field disabilities. By working in conjunction with T.I.E, Together Information Exchange, to put this information onto a website with links to related services and more detailed information. By organising annual information days covering a range of topics relating to childhood disability of interest to parents and professionals. By acting as a source of reference and information for local authorities that are keen to involve clients in decision-making. Where possible by suggesting ideas to promote good practice in service provision.
