Team Doncaster recommits to working together to tackle poverty

Representatives from groups and organisations across Doncaster this week signed up to a new statement committing to work together to tackle poverty across the borough.

The updated Anti Poverty Commitment Statement, containing thirteen principles for action, has been approved by all members of Team Doncaster. This ongoing commitment to tackle poverty includes reducing both the causes and impact of poverty within Doncaster.

The 13 principles for action are that those signed up will:

  1. Work together using an intelligence led approach to tackle poverty in everything we do, including policy and service delivery.
  2. Minimise disadvantage to those experiencing, or at risk of, poverty through our decision making.
  3. Work to change situations where poverty is a barrier to the receipt of services.
  4. Promote opportunities to improve education and skills for all.
  5. Attract better paid jobs to Doncaster so that poverty does not become a barrier to opportunity and achievement.
  6. Offer apprenticeships, training, volunteering opportunities and work experience placements to help people become work ready.
  7. Ensure there are appropriate support mechanisms in place to help those people who are furthest away from being work ready.
  8. Work together to plan and deliver appropriate, accessible advice and support to those experiencing, or at risk of, poverty.
  9. Work with, listen to and support our communities to develop a culture of independence regardless of age or circumstance.
  10. Promote and support the health and wellbeing of people experiencing or at risk of poverty.
  11. Work to promote the awareness of poverty and the impacts and reduce the stigma associated with being affected by poverty.
  12. Reduce the extent of financial exclusion through the promotion of the living wage and access to affordable credit.
  13. Promote the commitment to local procurement in order to maximise the impact of the Doncaster Pound.

We have been working on tackling poverty for many years but we now need everyone to help and so we invite others to join our quest to improve the lives of all people in Doncaster and to ensure that those who are at risk of, or are already experiencing poverty, are not left behind or impacted upon negatively.”

This ongoing work continues to make a great difference to those facing hardship, but it’s also key in improving future opportunities too for local families and individuals, ensuring Doncaster remains a vibrant and inclusive place to live in the years ahead. We will continue to work closely with the voluntary and faith sector, as well as our other partners, to deliver a better future for all."

  • Richard Parker – Chief Executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Kathryn Singh – Chief Executive of Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Sharon Thorpe – JobCentre Plus District Manager for South Yorkshire at the Department of Work and Pensions.
  • Paul Tanney – Chief Executive of St Leger Homes of Doncaster and Chair of the Anti Poverty Strategy Group.


Doncaster Growing Together is made up of organisations and individuals from across the borough of Doncaster. This includes Doncaster Council, St Leger Homes, Doncaster Children’s Services Trust, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, South Yorkshire Police, NHS bodies including the local NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Group, local charities and the Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and Doncaster College.
