Public Transport Information

Throughout Great Britain, with the exception of London, public transport is operated by private companies who decide on what services to run and what fares to charge.

In South Yorkshire, the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is responsible for coordinating and providing information about these services as well as promoting and encouraging the growth of the public transport network. Furthermore, the SYPTE acts as a link between the public and transport operators for all comments about bus, rail and tram services in South Yorkshire.

Whether you are travelling from Doncaster to John O'Groats or Adwick to Bentley, a complete on-line Journey Planner incorporating timetables from all forms of transport is available here....

Travel Information Centres (TICs)

SYPTE operate a countywide network of travel information centres (TIC) that provide information to make journeys on public transport as easy as possible. The centres deal with public transport enquiries including timetables, travel tickets, concessionary passes and will provide any help you may need regarding public transport.

The larger TICs are located at:

Concessionary Fares

There are a huge range of travel passes available in South Yorkshire for use on buses, trains and trams.

Everyone over 60 who lives in South Yorkshire qualifies for a Senior Citizens Pass, which allows the holder to travel free on local buses, trains and trams.

The free concession pass is valid throughout South Yorkshire from 0900 weekdays, and at any time on weekends and Bank Holidays.

There are a number of ways to apply for a Senior Citizens travel pass :

16-18 Student Pass

If you live in South Yorkshire, are aged 16 to 18 and are in full time education, you qualify for a Student Pass.

This allows you to travel for the concessionary fare, currently 40p on buses and trams. The pass also provides half fare on journeys in South Yorkshire on Arriva Trains Northern (excluding TransPennine services).

Mobility Pass

If you live in South Yorkshire, are under 65 and:

you qualify for a Mobility Pass, which allows you to travel free of charge on all local buses, trains and trams throughout South Yorkshire. There are no travelling time restrictions.

Bus Services

The main operators of commercial bus services in Doncaster are First and Yorkshire Traction. Other bus operators in the Doncaster area include Wilfreda Beehive, Stagecoach, Powells, GM Travel and Mass Leon.

In certain circumstances, the SYPTE can fund bus services to run in places and at times, where there is no 'commercial' (that is, unsubsidised) service. Without these contracted services, many rural areas and even some urban areas would have no public transport at all.

Rail

Doncaster lies on the East Coast Mainline, meaning that many destinations are within easy access. London is just over an hour and a half away. Edinburgh is just over 3 hours away, whilst closer to home Leeds is 40 minutes away and York and Sheffield are about 25 minutes by train.

National Express, Virgin, Central Trains and Arriva Trains Northern Rail are the train operating companies that serve Doncaster. Rail travel is hassle free, you can relax, read, unwind and you arrive at your destination without the stress of having to find a parking space.

National Rail Enquiries can be made by calling 08457 48 49 50 or by clicking the adjacent National Rail link.
