Background
Doncaster is already taking the first steps towards achieving a pedestrian friendly future. The extent and quality of the award winning pedestrianisation of the Town Centre has been well received. In 1999, Doncaster won the British Council of Shopping Centres Design Award for Phase IV of its Quality Streets Initiative. The Council, in partnership with stakeholders, wish to expand upon this work by producing a comprehensive walking strategy.
The Strategy
In developing this strategy, Doncaster Council is showing a commitment to walking and a quality pedestrian environment. We recognise that reliance on the car for many types of personal journeys is not always sustainable and that good quality alternatives for certain key journeys must be developed and promoted. Our vision is to provide safe, people friendly streets. This strategy will concentrate on walking in the urban environment. Separate issues and policies exist for walking in the countryside and public right of way. Synergy will be maintained between the urban and rural strategies.
Core Objectives
The core objectives of the strategy are to:
Make walking safer by providing attractive, pedestrian friendly streets giving a greater opportunity to walk and reducing pedestrian casualties.
Improve mobility, giving priority to the needs of pedestrians in the design of transport infrastructure by creating standards for design, safety and quality.
Improve maintenance and remove obstructions to the footway.
Increase publicity on the health benefits of walking and encourage a walking culture in young people as part of Safer Routes to School.
