Introduction to Traffic Management

The management of traffic is essential to improving both safety and the environment, but it is also about changing people's attitudes towards travel behaviour. Traffic management includes physical infrastructure improvements and the use of traffic regulations. Increasing levels of traffic especially in town centres and residential areas can have a significant effect on health, accidents, stress and air pollution. Through management of traffic in these areas, the impact of traffic can be minimised by encouraging all traffic to reduce speeds and for non-essential traffic to use alternative routes.

Doncaster is becoming increasingly affluent and as a result car ownership is growing. We cannot keep covering up our green spaces with new roads and car parks, therefore the Council is committed to maximising access to our existing roads and promoting travel opportunities. This is achieved through the management of bus facilities, taxis, pedestrians, cycling, car parking, disabled parking and access, loading and unloading, and residents' parking. Our traffic management engineers must consider all users when making changes to the roads infrastructure often resulting in a compromise solution that balances the benefits among all groups.
