In April 2003 the government gave Peel Airports the go-ahead to transform the former RAF Finningley site into an international commercial airport catering for up to 2.3 million passengers per year. Robin Hood Airport is now able to operate flights to the UK, European and long haul destinations as well as handling air cargo.
A new airport of this size has the potential to create many thousands of new job opportunities, working at the airport itself or close by in support services. This is very good news for people in the area.
Initially airport traffic is being accommodated by existing roads and public transport, both of which have been improved. However, as the airport and the associated employment opportunities expand, we think that there will be a need for new transport infrastructure and services.
Doncaster Council has commissioned a study into transport in the area, both road and public transport links. Part of the study is to consult with all key stakeholders in the area to make sure their thoughts are considered before a decision is made. This will identify what transport proposals will need to be brought forward. It will also include looking at the planned link between Rossington and the M18.
The study is being undertaken by Mouchel Parkman, the Council's framework consultant for highways and civil engineering. The following study documents can be viewed below:
