Within this Group is a specialist team of bridge engineers providing professional services to National Standards for the development, design and construction of major highway schemes where bridges or retaining walls or other highway structures are included – current schemes include the proposed new bridge on White Rose Way and major maintenance to the existing Balby Bridge.
This team also programmes, arranges and carries out regular cyclic inspections of, and determines the requirements for the maintenance of, all bridges and highway structures under the control of Doncaster Council (over 871 in number). Where required this includes the determination of load carrying capacities of these bridges and developing, designing and controlling the construction of any required strengthening and maintenance works. Budgets for this work are compiled and once granted are controlled by the Group.
The group responds to emergency situations when required such as the floods in 2007 and a fire below St Georges Bridge in 2008. Many structures suffer damage, mainly through vehicle impact each year which require urgent maintenance to ensure the safety of the public.
The team also provides advice to all Council Directorates and external organisations on matters relating to bridges and highway structures, and on the routing of abnormal loads through the borough in relation to loading on bridges.
As such this advice and information procurement, results in contributions to, and production of Board Reports, Planning Consultations, Construction assessments, reviews, attendance at corporate groups and officer working parties for such projects as White Rose Way, the proposed link road from J3 on the M18 to Rossington/Finningley and the Great Streets project.
