South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership

Background
Doncaster Council is a partner with Rotherham, Sheffield and Barnsley Councils; The Highways Agency; South Yorkshire Magistrates Court Committee and South Yorkshire Police in the South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership. Having secured 'Netting Off' status, the income raised by the partnership from safety camera enforcement is recovered (netted off) to support the cost of installing and running the cameras.

Objective
The primary objective of the partnership is to reduce the number of people injured on our roads by the deployment of cameras in accordance with strict Government criteria at sites with a history of speed related fatal or serious collisions.

Making South Yorkshire Roads Safer

'Making South Yorkshire Roads Safer' is the strapline for the joint road safety campaigns run by the road safety partnership. The partnership runs joint campaigns to reduce road casualties across South Yorkshire with the aim of making its roads safer.

See Me Bags

The latest campaign that has been done in partnership encourages elderly pedestrians to be seen on the roads during the winter months.

During 2006 there were over 600 casualties in South Yorkshire, of these 270 were older bus passengers, about 5 percent of the overall total.  More importantly 46 pedestrians over the age of 60 were involved in collisions with buses.

The campaign will feature on 200 buses across South Yorkshire and on every bus stop carousel in the county, highlighting important road safety messages to elderly passengers. 20,000 free high visibility shopping bags will also be distributed across the region.
