Council gave residents chance to say where VAT on car parking should go

Following the decision by the Government to decrease the standard rate of VAT from 17.5% to 15%, Doncaster Council will be passing this reduction on to residents and visitors of the borough for attractions and leisure facilities.

Car parking charges will remain the same and the council conducted an online poll to hear from residents what should be done with the VAT saved on car parking.

Bluebell Wood wins parking VAT cut vote

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice has been named as the local charity to benefit from money raised from car parks due to the recent VAT cut.

The Government recently decreased the standard VAT rate from 17.5% to 15%, and we asked for residents’ suggestions on where they would like the VAT saved from car parks to go.

The online vote ran from Friday 19 December through to Monday 12 January. Over 1,500 people registered their votes throughout the period, with Bluebell Wood obtaining more than two thirds of the vote.

The Anston-based hospice could be set for a significant source of income. With 3,500 parking spaces around Doncaster, the VAT cut could equate to £700 per day when all the car parks are at optimum use.

Bluebell Wood Fundraising Director Greg Oldfield said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Doncaster Council and residents are pledging the VAT difference from the car parking scheme and would like to thank all the people that voted for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

“We provide specialist nursing care to our children, and provide fun, games and support for the whole family. It gives the parents the chance to be parents rather than full time carers, and this donation will make a huge difference to us.”
