Decriminalisation Of Parking Enforcement
What is Decriminalisation Of Parking Enforcement (DPE)?
- On street parking offences are decriminalised (they have ceased to be criminal offences).
- Enforcement ceases to be the responsibility of the Police and becomes the responsibility of the local authority
- This includes waiting and loading restrictions, pay and display bays, resident's parking places, loading bays, bus stop clearways and disabled parking places
- It applies to the whole of the borough
The main advantages of decriminalised of parking enforcement are:
- Better enforcement that can impact on congestion, deliveries, road safety, bus movements, disabled users, cyclists / pedestrians and residents
- Local authorities can use the revenue from penalty charges to fund the enforcement costs
In South Yorkshire, we have been working together with Sheffield Council, Barnsley Council and Rotherham Council to develop a consistent approach to DPE through out the county.
