The environmental impact of procurement decisions should form an integral part of the option appraisal process. The Council has a Sustainable Development Plan and the contents of this should be considered in the context of each strategic procurement. The Council has a responsibility to act as a role model for the local area by taking into account the potential for sustainable development whenever it makes a choice on the procurement route or eventual provider of works, supplies and services.
Doncaster Council has set various environmental targets, therefore, we want to work with our contractors and suppliers to encourage them to identify and minimise the environmental impacts of their activities by reducing waste, conserving energy and not using hazardous materials.
Green procurement issues should therefore form part of the evaluation process for each strategic procurement and should be one of the element of the whole life cost which is always considered.
Further explanation of green procurement issues is given in the Procurement Best Practice Guide.
